Tweet Responsible for Diverting San Diego Flight

Just about everyone these days has at least one social media account. Most of these users also understand that they need to be careful about the information they make public. Amongst other things, there could be serious consequences where relationships, work and reputation are concerned. However, sometimes social media can have especially serious consequences.

Whether you’re joking or not, social media messages about things like the safety of commercial flights are an easy way to attract the wrong kinds of attention. While many people have made innocent comments on Twitter and Facebook that were simply taken out of context, other times people clearly had mischievous intentions.

That seems to be the case recently when a flight due for San Diego had to stop early in Phoenix when a tweet was found that mentioned possible explosives onboard.

The tweet was sent at around 11:45 am by an account called @LizardSquad and was directed at the official American Airlines account. It read:

“@AmericanAir We emericanAirWe es account. It read:

e oficial  Air official  Diego had to stop early in Phoenix when a tweet was found that menthave been receiving reports that @j_smedley’s plane #362 from DFW to SAN has explosives on-board, please look into this.”

That second Twitter account referenced belongs to John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment. Earlier in the day, the @LizardSquad account also took credit for launching a viral attack against Sony Playstation Network. Sony since confirmed that they had indeed suffered an attack.

After landing and being searched by the FBI, the plane was later allowed to continue on to San Francisco. At this time, the true identity of the @LizardSquad account is still unknown, but you can bet the FBI is actively looking into it.

While this certainly doesn’t seem like a mistake tweet taken the wrong way, this is even more reason for why the people involved should find a qualified attorney to defend them from the serious consequences they are about to face.
