Signs of Elder Abuse in Loved Ones

Posted by & filed under Elder Abuse Litigation.

If your loved one depends on the care of a nursing home, then you have to depend on that home to care for them properly. Unfortunately, there are cases of elder abuse that result in injury, illness, or even death.

When you check in on your loved one, you need to know the signs that abuse may be taking place. Obviously, you will need to get your loved one out of a bad situation, but also there may be legal action you can take to receive compensation for the abuse.

How do you know that your elderly loved one is being abused or neglected? They may not or may not be able to tell you. The signs “may appear to be symptoms of dementia or signs of the elderly person’s frailty – or caregivers may explain them to you that way.” (Signs of Elder Abuse) Be careful when you watch for such signs as:

  • Unexplained bruises, scars, or welts
  • Broken eyeglasses
  • Broken bones or dislocations
  • Drug overdoses
  • Changes in personality of the patient

Additionally, if the caregiver refuses to allow you to spend time with your loved one alone, then this could be a warning sign that something is wrong. Never ignore signs of elder abuse in a nursing home.
