Mail Carriers Really Are in Danger from Dog Bites

In mid-May, mail carriers in San Diego’s Logan Heights neighborhood received additional training to help them stay safe from dog bites. This training really is necessary, and according to Ken Snavely, San Diego Postmaster, these dangers are very real. He goes on to say San Diego is actually fourth in the country for dog bites and attacks on mail carriers. Many postal workers have to deal with more than one dog bite during their career. They hope that this recent training will help to give them at least a little more knowledge when it comes to how to deal with an attack.

Still, all the training in the world doesn’t make it feel any less dangerous when you have one or more dogs, with open, slavering jaws, racing toward you. While mail carriers are certainly in an at risk position, that does not mean that they are the only ones in danger from attacks. Children playing on the sidewalk, walking, or spending time in their own yards become victims as well. Anyone, child or adult, can be the victim of a dog bite. Even a dog that they “know” could bite under the wrong circumstances.

What do you do if you are the victim of a dog bite? First, in the event of a severe attack, you need immediate medical attention, naturally. Those that don’t require medical attention should not merely be forgotten though. The animal is still dangerous and it could pose a threat to another person. You need to take legal action regardless of the severity of the attack. Talk with a San Diego attorney who as experience in this area of personal injury law.
