Hit and Runs Getting Worse in San Diego

Sometimes accidents simply happen. Even really bad ones can be difficult to avoid. This isn’t a fun reality to face, but it’s the truth. More important than facing this truth, though is doing what’s right in the wake of an accident. It’s often tempting to simply leave the scene when you believe the responsibility is yours. Not only will this leave you with far greater consequences, but it can also mean an innocent party losing their life.

In San Diego, the amount of hit and runs that occur every year seem to be staying at a constant level, according to information released by the California Highway Patrol. Unfortunately, this data also suggests that San Diego is seeing an increase in incidents where people are leaving the scene after an accident that leaves the other motorist, bicyclist, or pedestrian in critical condition.

For example, in this year alone, 11 bicyclists and pedestrians have been struck and killed by drivers who then fled the scene. That’s a death more than the average of the past five years and we’re only halfway through the year.

Sadly, six of those incidents have resulted in fatalities and only one of them has so far been solved by the San Diego Police Department.

Whenever you’re in an accident, whether you caused it or not, it’s essential that you keep your head. It’s important that you collect as many facts as possible, such as the time it occurred, the license plate number of the other vehicle(s) involved, and even information from witnesses who saw what occurred.

The last thing you want to do, however, is drive away. Hit and runs carry severe punishments. Instead, wait for the authorities to show up and invoke your right to speak to an attorney. Of course, if you’re the victim of a hit and run, speaking to qualified personal injury attorney is a surefire way to ensure you get what’s rightfully yours.
