Hit-and-Run Ends with Marine Dead

Last Thursday, August 21st, a marine lost his life while traveling northbound on the 300 block of Douglas Drive. Police say that it was sometime in the morning when Brandon Joseph Bizzaro, who was on active duty, was riding his motorcycle at the same time someone in a Budget Rental box truck was sharing the road too.

At some point, the driver of the truck went to make a u-turn ahead of Bizarro. The marine was unable to adjust in time by stopping, meaning he and his motorcycle ran into the truck. As a result, the 22-year old Bizarro suffered major blunt trauma to his head. He was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was later put on life support, but only made it to around 4:30 pm before drying.

Although he had originally fled the scene, the other driver involved in the accident eventually returned and confessed to authorities what he had done. They took him to the police station where he was interviewed and then arrested. Identified as Ezequiel Garcia, he has been charged with felony hit-and-run and is being held with a $50,000 bail. He will be sentenced Tuesday.

While there are more details to come, at the moment, it remains a mystery what, if any, factors may have played a role in the accident. Investigators are still looking into whether or not alcohol was involved or if Garcia was simply going too fast. Anyone who was a witness to the accident is asked to come forward with information or call the lead investigator, Bryan Hendrix, at 760-435-4882.

Obviously, it’s never a good idea to commit a hit-and-run. While no one wants to be responsible for an accident, fleeing the scene isn’t going to make things better. Instead, do your best to see to everyone’s wellbeing and then contact a qualified attorney immediately.
