Fireworks Accident Takes Man’s Hands

If you’re like most people, your plans for the 4th of July involved at least a firework or two. Maybe you even took the family to a local display. Like a lot of people, though, you may not be done with your share of fireworks this summer. Just because the 4th is over doesn’t mean there aren’t other opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of this American pastime. It does mean, however, that you should be careful and understand when a lawyer is necessary in the face of an accident.

One San Jose resident had to learn the hard way just how unpredictable and dangerous fireworks can be. A police spokesman reported that on the 4th of July, he was holding a firework when it unexpectedly went off.

The accident was reported to have happened at around 9pm on the 1300 block of Leeward Drive, not far from Cassel Park. Multiple news organizations have reported the victim as Alazar Ortiz, 40, of East San Jose.

Although he is, fortunately, expected to survive the accident, the explosion still took both his hands with it.

It should be pointed out that Mr. Ortiz is suspected of having been lighting illegal fireworks when this occurred. The professional grade nature of the fireworks is why it was able to cause such damage when it went off. However, police have yet to confirm what kind of firework was involved or even if it was lit at the time it exploded.

An obvious takeaway from this story is simply to avoid illegal fireworks. The legal ones can be dangerous enough. However, anytime you’re part of such an accident, you’d do well to consult a local personal injury attorney. If the fireworks went off because of a malfunction, the manufacturer could be held personally responsible. It’s important you have a legal expert make sure you’re getting the compensation you deserve in such a situation.
