Father Faces Charges in the Death of His Son

No one truly knows how they’d react in the wake of an accident. If said accident were to involve a loved one, it’s probably even harder to predict. This will be, in large part, the defense attorneys plan on using to keep Angel Fabiani out of jail in a few weeks.

The accident in question happened this past July when Mr. Fabiani and his four-year-old son were returning from Mission Beach and he lost control of his truck by the I-5 and I-8 interchange. Doing so resulted in the vehicle hanging over the side of a retaining wall. Fabiani’s son was left hanging out the window, unconscious and bleeding profusely. In an attempt to save his son, Fabiani used a tool from his truck to cut the seatbelt. Unfortunately, this released the son’s body, which then fell to the ground below.

According to Fabiani, as soon as he heard the sound of his son’s body hitting the ground, he went into a state of shock. Instead of addressing his son, then, Fabiani walked 19 miles to Imperial Beach, a place he and his son used to visit often. Police finally arrested him there two days later.

Although there’s reason to believe that the child was already dead prior to falling out of the car, Fabiani didn’t do himself any favors by initially fleeing the scene. He allegedly returned moments later, which is when he cut his son’s seatbelt. Alcohol is not believed to have played a role in the accident or ensuing events.

While we don’t know what caused the initial accident, Fabiani is being charged with child endangerment and walking away from the scene of a crash. If convicted, he could face between two and three years in prison.

It’s impossible to know how any of us would react in Mr. Fabiani’s shoes. But it’s important that you never leave the scene of a crash for this reason. You also need to speak with an attorney as soon as possible.
