This past Friday, a bicyclist was killed after he collided with a pickup truck. Sadly, accidents involving bicyclists and much larger vehicles aren’t altogether rare in this city or the area that surrounds it. But, fortunately, most don’t result in fatalities.
Sadly, in this case, the 60-year-old man who was riding his bicycle through Chula Vista is believed to have died upon impact.
Facts are still coming in regarding the events that led up to the accident. We know it occurred sometime around 3:00 p.m. and that the crash took place on the 800 block of Hilltop Drive. Both the driver and rider were headed southbound when the cyclist is said to have taken a sharp left turn that put him in front of the pickup truck. Until that point, though, the cyclist is said to have been observing proper safety precautions by sticking to the edge of the roadway.
Despite the driver’s best efforts to swerve and miss the cyclist, a collision was inevitable. The biker was still struck and killed. Authorities have not yet released the name of either man. However, the driver of the truck is believed to have walked away from the crash without injury.
At this time, we also don’t know if alcohol or drugs played a role. While it sounds as though the truck driver did everything he could to avoid a collision, the authorities have also said that an investigation is ongoing at this time.
If the driver is found to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol when behind the wheel, the cyclist’s family would be smart to hire an experienced attorney as soon as possible. Although nothing can make up for the death of their family member, an attorney will see that they are properly represented. For this same reason, even if he isn’t responsible, the driver of the pickup truck may also want to seek legal help.
